Dr Rachael Treharne, Postdoctoral Researcher, Woodwell Climate Research Center: I've been hooked on Arctic science since my first experience of 'wilderness' during an undergraduate field-trip to Northern Sweden. I now work on the consequences of permafrost thaw and wildfire for global carbon budgets at Woodwell Climate Research Center. My scientific community has had a defining impact on how I now perceive aspects of my own identity, including as an LGBT person, and I feel strongly that open, inclusive science is not only critical to research quality and researcher wellbeing, but is also a powerful tool in tackling the scale of the challenge posed by climate change. Dan Hdidouan, PhD Researcher, Imperial College London: I was born in inner South London, to a Roman Catholic Italian mother, and a Muslim Moroccan father - this set me up for having an inclusive and international perspective on global challenges... like climate change! Now I’m finishing a PhD at Imperial College London focusing on understanding the impacts of climate change on the economics of renewable energy. Twitter: @danielhdidouan

Dr Agustí Egea Alvarez, Chancellor’s fellow and Lecturer, University of Strathclyde, Electronic & Electrical Engineering department. Since I was an undergraduate student, I have been committed to fighting against the human-made climate change. During the first years of my professional career, I researched different connection schemes for offshore wind farms and converter controllers for wind turbines. After working in several industrial companies, in 2018, I became a Lecturer at the University of Strathclyde. My team and I are developing converter-based technologies to make possible a future with 100% renewable electrical generation. In recent years, I experienced that inclusive science is a very powerful tool that can boost the research outputs and improve group dynamics, even in fields like engineering where diversity and inclusion has been traditionally overlooked. About STEM Equals: The STEM Equals project is a four year research and impact project focused on women and LGBT+ people in STEM in both academia and in industry. Through an intersectional lens, the project focuses on working cultures within higher education and industry, including better understanding the experiences of and addressing systemic inequalities faced by women and LGBT staff in STEM disciplines.
